How to help prevent disease and keep garden birds healthy.

The RSPB has voiced concern over the spread of a life threatening disease amongst wild finches (particularly green finches), namely trichomonosis.  Feeders with flat surfaces are potentially the worst for harbouring disease hence the RSPB’s decision to stop selling them.

All bird feeders should be cleaned regularly to help prevent parasite, bacterial and fungal transmission between birds who are eating there frequently.  Use soapy water to scrub feeding stations and rinse thoroughly with cold water.  Allow to dry before refilling.

Today is the start of the Big Garden Bird Watch and you can register to record what species you see where you live.  The data gathered helps the RSPB and other organisations understand more about our feathered friends.
